Planner prefilled from take-home pay

Budgets built on gross salary overstate what you can spend. The planner starts from take-home pay instead: by default, the $2,469.23 a fortnight left from a $80,000 salary after income tax and the Medicare levy. From the pay calculator, follow the budget planner link under your result to carry your own take-home pay across.

If your pay varies, use a typical or lower-than-average pay so the budget holds in a quiet period.

Expense categories

Expenses are grouped into essentials, debts and lifestyle, and the result shows each group as a share of your pay:

Enter each bill at the frequency it arrives: quarterly for most energy bills, yearly for car registration or insurance paid up front. The planner converts every amount through a yearly figure, so nothing is lost to months having more than four weeks.

Savings target

Set your savings target as a percentage of take-home pay. It is taken out before the “left over” figure, so what remains is genuinely free to spend. If the result turns red, your expenses and savings together are more than your pay: trim a category or lower the target until it balances.

Frequently asked questions

Should I budget weekly, fortnightly or monthly?

Match your pay cycle, so each budget period starts with a pay. If you’re paid fortnightly but rent is monthly, enter the rent as monthly and the planner converts it: $2,000.00 a month is $923.08 a fortnight, because there are 26 fortnights but only 12 months in a year.

Is my budget saved?

Your expenses are saved in this browser on this device, so they’re still there next time. They aren’t sent to us or put in the page address. Clearing your browser data, or using a private window, removes them. Use “Download CSV” to keep a copy.

How much should I save?

There’s no single right amount; it depends on your costs, debts and goals. Setting a percentage target and paying it to a separate account on payday makes it easier to stick to. The planner shows what is left once the target is set aside.
