What is and is not different in TAS

The tax on your pay in Tasmania is identical to the rest of Australia. Income tax, the Medicare levy, HECS-HELP and the super guarantee are federal, so the calculator gives a Hobart salary the same result as a Brisbane one. What Tasmania does differently is mostly about which days you have off:

The federal rates the calculator uses are on the tax rates page.

Whether a holiday applies to your workplace, and what you are paid if you work it, depends on your award, agreement and the National Employment Standards, particularly for Tasmania’s regional and public-service-only days. TAS long service leave

The Long Service Leave Act 1976 (Tas) gives private sector employees 8⅔ weeks of paid leave after 10 years of continuous employment, then 4⅓ weeks after each further 5 years. Mining employees have separate provisions.

An employee with at least 7 but less than 10 years of continuous employment may be entitled to a pro-rata payment when employment ends.

It covers everyone aged 15 and over, including people who are not working, so it is much lower than full-time earnings and is best used to compare areas with each other.

Frequently asked questions

Is income tax different in TAS?

No. Tasmanian residents pay federal income tax, the Medicare levy and HECS-HELP repayments at the same rates as everyone else. In 2026–27 a $80,000 salary leaves $64,200.00 after tax in Launceston as it does in Perth.

Does payroll tax come out of my pay?

No. It is paid by employers. In 2026–27 employers pay 4% on wages between $1,250,000 and $2 million and 6.1% above that, according to State Revenue Office Tasmania. It does not appear on your payslip.

How many public holidays does TAS have?

Tasmania has 9 public holidays that apply statewide in 2026–27. Most people also get either Royal Hobart Regatta in February or Recreation Day in November, depending on where they live, and some areas have show days. Easter Tuesday is in Tasmania’s holidays legislation, but it generally applies only to the Tasmanian Public Service. Most private sector workers have a normal working day, which is why it is listed as a regional holiday in the table and not counted among the statewide days.
