Common multipliers
Penalty rates are set by your award or enterprise agreement, not by law for everyone, so they differ between industries. This is not an award lookup. The calculator starts with the General Retail Industry Award 2020 rates as an example, shown below as a percentage of the minimum hourly rate. Casual rates include the 25% casual loading.
| Hours worked | Full-time and part-time | Casual |
|---|---|---|
| Monday to Friday, ordinary hours | 100% | 125% |
| Monday to Friday, after 6.00 pm | 125% | 150% |
| Saturday | 125% | 150% |
| Sunday | 150% | 175% |
| Public holiday | 225% | 250% |
| Overtime, Monday to Saturday, first 3 hours | 150% | 175% |
| Overtime, Monday to Saturday, after 3 hours | 200% | 225% |
| Overtime, Sunday | 200% | 225% |
| Overtime, public holiday | 250% | 275% |

In this award, overtime is worked out day by day: the first 3 hours of overtime on a day Monday to Saturday are paid at the lower rate, and anything after that at the higher one. Other awards may count overtime by the week, or start penalty rates at a different time of day.
Public holiday pay
If you work on a public holiday, your award or agreement may give you a higher rate, a day off in lieu or extra annual leave. In the General Retail Industry Award 2020, ordinary hours on a public holiday are paid at 225%; at $26.44 an hour that is $59.49 an hour.
If you don’t work, full-time and part-time employees who would normally have worked that day are still paid their base rate for the ordinary hours they would have worked, without penalty rates, loadings or overtime. Casuals aren’t paid for public holidays they don’t work. Employers can ask you to work a public holiday, but the request must be reasonable, and you can refuse on reasonable grounds.

Worked weekend example
A casual retail employee on a base rate of $26.44 (the National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026) works 8 hours on Saturday and 6 hours on Sunday.
- Saturday: 8 hours × $39.66 (150%) = $317.28
- Sunday: 6 hours × $46.27 (175%) = $277.62
That is $594.90 for 14 hours, $132.20 more than the same hours at the casual weekday rate. After $41.00 of tax withheld from the weekly tax table, the employee takes home $553.90.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the penalty rates in my award?
Use the Fair Work Ombudsman’s Pay and Conditions Tool, which works out rates for your award, level and the hours you work, or download the pay guide for your award. If you’re covered by an enterprise agreement, the rates are in the agreement. Then enter them in this calculator under “Penalty and overtime rates”.
Is super paid on overtime and penalty rates?
Super is paid on penalty rates and casual loading for ordinary hours, but not on overtime, as long as your ordinary hours are clearly set by your award or agreement. From 1 July 2026 the minimum is 12% of these “qualifying earnings” (ATO, last updated 2 September 2026). Your award may require super on more.
Why is tax so high on a week with overtime?
Tax withheld comes from the ATO weekly tax table, which treats each week’s pay as if you earned it every week of the year. A big week is taxed as if your yearly income were higher. If your overtime is irregular, some of that tax may come back as a refund when you lodge your return.
