What is and is not different in WA
Western Australians are taxed exactly like everyone else in the country. The income tax brackets, Medicare levy, HECS-HELP thresholds and super guarantee behind the calculator are set in Canberra, so a salary in Perth or Port Hedland comes out the same. WA’s differences are in the calendar and the rules around your job:
- 13 public holidays in 2026–27, including Western Australia Day in June and a King’s Birthday in late September rather than June.
- No Easter Saturday public holiday, unlike most of the eastern states.
- An alternative King’s Birthday in August for Karratha and Port Hedland, which replaces the September date there.
- Payroll tax paid by employers at 5.5% of taxable wages, with a $1,000,000 threshold that phases out for larger employers.
- Public sector pay set by industrial agreements registered with the WA Industrial Relations Commission.
The federal rates the calculator uses are on the tax rates page.

Employees can be absent on a public holiday, and an employer’s request to work one has to be reasonable. If you do work, your award or agreement sets any public holiday rate or substitute day. Check the Fair Work Ombudsman’s public holidays guidance and its penalty rates information for what applies to your job.

Full-time adults in Western Australia earned an average of $2,227.40 a week in ordinary time in May 2026, compared with $2,083.70 nationally. Over a year that is $115,825, which leaves $88,561.12 after tax in 2026–27.

The ABS does not publish average weekly earnings for individual cities. The closest official local figure is median weekly personal income from the 2021 Census. It covers everyone aged 15 and over, including people who are not working, so it is much lower than full-time earnings and is best used to compare areas with each other.
| Area (ABS region) | Median weekly income |
|---|---|
| Perth (Greater Perth) | $859 |
| Bunbury | $739 |
| Mandurah | $630 |
| Western Australia | $848 |
| Australia | $805 |

Frequently asked questions
Is income tax different in WA?
No. There is no Western Australian income tax. Residents pay the federal rates, Medicare levy and HECS-HELP repayments, so $80,000 becomes $64,200.00 after tax in 2026–27 in Perth just as it would in Sydney or Hobart. Higher pay in mining regions changes your bracket, not the rules.
Does payroll tax come out of my pay?
No. WA payroll tax is charged to employers on the wages they pay, at 5.5%, once their Australia-wide wages pass $1,000,000 a year, according to Government of Western Australia. It is not a deduction from your wages.
How many public holidays does WA have?
WA has 13 public holidays in 2026–27, counting the extra Mondays for Boxing Day and Anzac Day. There is no Easter Saturday holiday. Western Australia sets its own date for the King’s Birthday public holiday, which in 2026 is Monday 28 September. WA Day takes the early June slot instead. Karratha and Port Hedland observe the holiday on an alternative date in August, so the September date is a normal working day there.
