What reduces your take-home pay
On $70,000 in 2026–27, you take home $57,400: $11,220 goes in income tax and $1,380 in Medicare levy, an average rate of 18%. Other things that can reduce it:
- A HECS-HELP debt: $0 a year on $70,000, leaving $57,400. See the HECS-HELP guide.
- No private hospital cover on a higher income: on $110,000, the Medicare levy surcharge costs $1,090 a year. Check yours with the Medicare levy surcharge calculator.
- Salary sacrifice: sacrificing $5,000 into super on $70,000 cuts take-home pay by $3,360, but adds $4,250 to super.
Frequently asked questions
What is take-home pay?
Your pay after income tax, the Medicare levy and any HECS-HELP repayment, which is what reaches your bank account. Super is paid on top by your employer and isn’t part of take-home pay.
Why is my payslip different from this calculator?
This calculator shows your take-home pay for the whole year, after your real tax. Your payslip shows the tax your employer withholds, which uses ATO tables and can be slightly more or less. Any difference is settled in your tax return; see how much tax you will get back.
How can I increase my take-home pay?
Claim the tax-free threshold from your main job only, keep records of work expenses above the standard deduction, consider private hospital cover if you are near the Medicare levy surcharge threshold, and look at salary packaging such as a novated lease on an electric car.
