What is and is not different in SA

South Australia does not set any part of the tax on your pay. Every figure in the calculator, from the income tax brackets to the Medicare levy, HECS-HELP and super guarantee, is the same national rule used in Adelaide, Darwin and Melbourne. The South Australian differences sit around your pay:

The federal rates the calculator uses are on the tax rates page.

SA long service leave

Under the Long Service Leave Act 1987 (SA), full-time, part-time and casual workers are entitled to 13 weeks of long service leave after 10 years of continuous service, then 1.3 weeks for each further year.

A worker with at least 7 but less than 10 years of continuous service is paid out pro-rata leave (1.3 weeks for each completed year) when employment ends, unless it ends for serious and wilful misconduct or the worker leaves without giving the notice required.

The ABS does not publish average weekly earnings for individual cities. The closest official local figure is median weekly personal income from the 2021 Census. It covers everyone aged 15 and over, including people who are not working, so it is much lower than full-time earnings and is best used to compare areas with each other.

Frequently asked questions

Is income tax different in SA?

No. South Australians pay the same federal income tax, Medicare levy and HECS-HELP repayments as other Australians. On $80,000 you keep $64,200.00 in 2026–27, wherever in the country you work.

Does payroll tax come out of my pay?

No. Payroll tax in South Australia is a tax on employers’ wage bills. Employers with Australia-wide wages over $1,500,000 pay up to 4.95%, as set out by RevenueSA. Nothing is taken from your pay for it.

How many public holidays does SA have?

SA has 13 full-day public holidays in 2026–27, plus part-day holidays from 7pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. One of them is the Proclamation Day holiday: South Australia’s Proclamation Day is 28 December, but the public holiday is observed on 26 December, the day other states call Boxing Day. In 2026 it falls on a Saturday, so Monday 28 December is an extra public holiday.
