Which hours to use
Full-time: the National Employment Standards set a maximum of 38 ordinary hours a week, so 38 is the usual full-time week and the default here. Some contracts and agreements set fewer ordinary hours, such as 37.5 or 35; use the figure in your contract.
Part-time: use the hours in your contract or roster.
Paid weeks: permanent full-time and part-time employees are paid for all 52 weeks, because their 4 weeks of annual leave are paid. Casuals are paid only for the weeks they work, so enter the number of weeks you expect to work.
On 38 hours and 52 weeks there are 1,976 paid hours in a year. Sources: Fair Work Ombudsman, hours of work and annual leave.
Casual rates vs permanent salary
A casual rate looks higher because it includes a casual loading in place of paid leave and other entitlements. For casuals on the National Minimum Wage the loading is 25%. To compare a casual rate with a permanent one, divide it by 1.25.
For example, a casual rate of $40.00 an hour is equivalent to a permanent rate of $32.00. A permanent employee on $32.00 for 38 hours a week is paid $63,232.00 a year, including 4 weeks of paid annual leave. A casual on $40.00 who works 38 hours a week for 48 weeks earns $72,960.00, with no paid leave.
The calculator shows both equivalents for whatever rate you enter. If an award or enterprise agreement covers you, check the casual loading it sets with the Fair Work Ombudsman.
