Frequently asked questions

How many public holidays are there in 2026–27?

Between 9 and 15 full-day statewide public holidays, depending on where you live: NSW 13, VIC 14, QLD 12, SA 13, WA 13, TAS 9, ACT 15, NT 13. Some holidays fall on weekends, and some states add a substitute day when that happens.

Do I get paid for a public holiday if I don’t work?

Full-time and part-time employees who would normally work on that day get the day off and are paid their base rate for their ordinary hours. Casuals aren’t paid for public holidays they don’t work. Source: Not working on public holidays, Fair Work Ombudsman.

How much do I get paid for working a public holiday?

It depends on your award or agreement. Under the General Retail Industry Award 2020, full-time and part-time employees get 225% of their base rate for ordinary hours on a public holiday. Enter your own rate in the calculator to see what your holidays are worth.

What happens if a public holiday falls on a weekend?

Many states declare a substitute or additional day, usually the following Monday. In New South Wales, for example, Boxing Day 2026 falls on a Saturday so Monday 28 December is an additional public holiday. The calculator counts these from each state’s official list.
