What is and is not different in NT

The Northern Territory does not tax wages. The income tax brackets, Medicare levy, HECS-HELP repayments and super guarantee in the calculator are the national ones, so a Darwin salary comes out the same as anywhere else. The Territory’s differences are in its holidays and leave rules:

The federal rates the calculator uses are on the tax rates page.

NT public holidays 2026–27

Northern Territory public holidays from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027 under the Public Holidays Act 1981, from the NT Government’s public holidays list. Show days apply only in their own regions.

NT employees can be absent on a public holiday, and those who work one, including the evening part-day holidays at Christmas and New Year, may be owed penalty rates under their award or agreement. Check the Fair Work Ombudsman’s public holidays guidance and its penalty rates information for what applies to your job.

NT long service leave

Under the Long Service Leave Act 1981 (NT), most employees can get 13 weeks of long service leave after 10 years of continuous service, calculated at 1.3 weeks for each year. Casual employees accrue it too, and leave cannot be cashed in instead of being taken.

With at least 7 but less than 10 years of service, pro-rata leave is paid out only if you have reached retirement age, your employer ends your employment for a reason other than serious misconduct, or you resign because of illness, incapacity or another pressing necessity. NT and Australian Government employees and construction workers in the NT Build scheme have their own arrangements.

The ABS does not publish average weekly earnings for individual cities. The closest official local figure is median weekly personal income from the 2021 Census. It covers everyone aged 15 and over, including people who are not working, so it is much lower than full-time earnings and is best used to compare areas with each other.

Frequently asked questions

Is income tax different in NT?

No. Territorians pay the same federal income tax, Medicare levy and HECS-HELP repayments as other Australians. In 2026–27, $80,000 leaves $64,200.00 after tax in Darwin or Alice Springs.

Does payroll tax come out of my pay?

No. Payroll tax in the Territory is a tax on employers with wages above $2,500,000 a year. The general rate is 5.5%, and from 1 July 2026 a 6.5% rate applies to groups with Australia-wide wages of $100 million or more, according to Territory Revenue Office.

How many public holidays does NT have?

The NT has 13 public holidays across the Territory in 2026–27, plus part-day holidays on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve evenings and a regional show day that depends on where you live. Anzac Day, 25 April 2027, falls on a Sunday. The NT Government lists the public holiday on Monday 26 April 2027, so that is the day off for most workers.
