What is and is not different in ACT
Living in the ACT does not change the tax on your pay. The calculator applies the national income tax rates, Medicare levy, HECS-HELP thresholds and super guarantee, the same as in every state. The ACT’s own rules affect the time around your pay:
- 15 public holidays in 2026–27, including Canberra Day in March and Reconciliation Day at the end of May.
- A bank holiday on the first Monday in August that does not apply to everyone.
- Long service leave from 7 years with one employer under the ACT Act, and portable schemes for construction, cleaning, community sector and security workers.
- Payroll tax paid by employers at 6.75% (up to 8.75% for the largest employers) on wages above $1,750,000 a year from 1 July 2026.
- ACT Public Service pay set by enterprise agreements published by the Fair Work Commission.
The federal rates the calculator uses are on the tax rates page.

ACT long service leave
The Long Service Leave Act 1976 (ACT) covers private sector employees whose award or agreement does not provide long service leave. An employee becomes entitled after 7 years of service with one employer, and leave accrues at 1/5 of a month for each year of service, so 7 years gives 1.4 months.
If employment ends after at least 5 but less than 7 years, a pro-rata payment is made when the employee leaves because of illness, incapacity or another pressing necessity, retires, dies, or is dismissed for a reason other than serious and wilful misconduct. Construction, cleaning, community sector and security workers are covered by portable schemes run by ACT Leave.

Earnings in ACT: Canberra
Full-time adults in the Australian Capital Territory earned an average of $2,290.20 a week in ordinary time in May 2026, compared with $2,083.70 nationally. Over a year that is $119,090, which leaves $90,781.60 after tax in 2026–27.
| Persons | Males | Females | |

The ABS does not publish average weekly earnings for individual cities. The closest official local figure is median weekly personal income from the 2021 Census. It covers everyone aged 15 and over, including people who are not working, so it is much lower than full-time earnings and is best used to compare areas with each other.
| Area (ABS region) | Median weekly income |
|---|---|
| Canberra (Australian Capital Territory) | $1,203 |
| The Australian Capital Territory | $1,203 |
| Australia | $805 |

Frequently asked questions
Is income tax different in ACT?
No. The ACT has no income tax of its own; Canberrans pay federal income tax, the Medicare levy and HECS-HELP repayments like everyone else. A $80,000 salary gives $64,200.00 after tax in 2026–27 in the ACT and in every state.
Does payroll tax come out of my pay?
No. The ACT charges payroll tax to employers, not employees. From 1 July 2026 the threshold fell to $1,750,000, and the rate starts at 6.75%, rising for very large employers, according to ACT Revenue Office. Your take-home pay is not affected.
How many public holidays does ACT have?
The ACT has 15 public holidays in 2026–27, the most of any state or territory on this site. As well as the national days, Canberra gets Canberra Day on Monday 8 March 2027, Reconciliation Day on Monday 31 May 2027, Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday, and extra Mondays for Boxing Day and Anzac Day. The August bank holiday is not included. Separately, the ACT has the highest average full-time earnings and median personal income of any state or territory in the ABS figures on this page. Higher earnings put more income into higher tax brackets, but the rates themselves are the same as everywhere else.
